![]() The Tay-Bush was a one-room cafe that drew night owls who danced to its jukebox until dawn. 14, 1961, when 242 patrons - nearly all of them men - were packed into the Tay-Bush Inn. The campaign was still active early Sept. Gay bars were subjected to harassment and surveillance, and many, including the Black Cat, were closed down. Mayor George Christopher, elected on a law-and-order platform in 1955, encouraged the campaign. The crackdown came in 1954 when the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, joined by police and the Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board, declared war on gay bars in San Francisco. ![]() The Examiner went so far as to editorialize that police should "drive (gays) out of the city." ![]() Within a few years, however, the political climate in San Francisco turned less friendly.
